Setting Up a Backup Gateway
The Backup Gateway feature in Payments AI is designed for subscription-based businesses, ensuring uninterrupted payment processing. If the primary gateway experiences downtime, disruptions, or declines, Payments AI automatically switches to your pre-determined backup gateway on the next payment attempt, preventing failed transactions and ensuring recurring payments are processed smoothly.
Backup gateway works for subscription products only, not one-time payments.
Backup gateway cannot be used with other gateway routing rules. You would have to use backup gateway or gateway automation rules, not both simultaneously.
In order to use backup gateway, you first must enable Automation Rules. IMPORTANT NOTE: Automation rules are a Pro Feature that require extra charges. There is a 0.5% per transaction fee to enable this feature.
How to Enable Backup Gateway
First, click Automation Rules tab from the top menu:
From there, on the left side menu, click Gateways under Automation Rules:
In the first section marked "backup gateway", click the Configure button on the right side:
Choose you default gateway and then choose your backup gateway. Then click Save. To use this feature, make sure you first connect two payment gateway options that support card payments such as Payments AI gateway and Stripe.
When Backup gateway is set up and active, the toggle will be blue as shown below. From here, you can toggle off/on.
If you try to enable a gateway routing rule while you have an active backup gateway, you will see the message below, letting you know that only one can be enabled at a time:
